Our Commute

The Full Story

Like many journeys, the Spiritual Commute was created out of a felt need to journey deeper into spiritual, religious, and theological conversations. I was part of several diverse and intense conversations happening with communities ranging from rural Texas to downtown Los Angeles to suburban Kansas. While many aspects of these conversations were amazing, they seemed to lead to little change in the communities themselves let alone in culture at large. The moment of clarity happened while I was studying for the my doctorate in Pasadena, California: these conversations and communities must go on a journey to find the change they are seeking. If the conversations and communities didn't first move, then they would simply justify themselves into staying right where they are. Yet, this journey had a destination and it didn't have to be permanent. Thus, I ended up calling it a "commute." As a fellow commuter in the greater Los Angeles metro, I knew the frustration, chaos, and sheer danger of commuting. Yet, I also knew the joy, the comfort, and the encouragement when I finally arrived at home. This is the Spiritual Commute for many people. They are on roads, ramps, and rest stops just trying to get home...a place where they feel like they belong and can have a sense of community. On such a commute, we want to encourage and equip you and let you know...you are not alone.
